Asbestos removal FAQ
Do I need a license to remove asbestos in Washington?
Only certified asbestos abatement contractors may bid on or perform the work (WAC 296-65-030). Owner-occupied single-family homeowners have a limited allowance for their own home. See the homeowner rules.
How do I know if my home has asbestos?
Only lab testing can tell. See the survey guide and the home-age guide.
Is asbestos only in old houses?
SRCAA applies its rules to renovation and demolition of any structure regardless of age (SRCAA). Older homes are more likely to contain it.
What is a survey and who can do it?
A survey is an inspection and sampling of materials by an accredited AHERA building inspector. SRCAA requires one before renovation or demolition (SRCAA).
Do I need to tell the clean air agency?
For most removal and demolition projects, yes, with a fee. Small amounts under 10 linear feet or 48 square feet per structure per year do not need notice. See the guide.
How long is the wait after notice?
Most projects have a 10-day wait. Mid-size jobs have a 3-day tier (SRCAA).
Where does asbestos waste go?
Graham Road Landfill in Medical Lake. It is the only county landfill that can accept it (Spokane County staff). See disposal.
Can I remove asbestos myself?
Owner-occupied single-family homeowners may remove their own asbestos without notice or fee, but rentals and multi-unit buildings do not qualify (SRCAA). Certified workers are encouraged.
What does removal cost?
It depends on material, amount and access. See the cost guide.
Is a popcorn ceiling always asbestos?
No. Only a lab test can say. Learn more on the popcorn ceiling page.
Should I leave vermiculite alone?
EPA advises not to disturb vermiculite insulation and to hire a professional if it must be removed (EPA). See the vermiculite page.
Is asbestos dangerous if it is not disturbed?
The danger comes from airborne fibers. SRCAA's regulation names lung cancer and mesothelioma as risks (Regulation 9.01). See health risks.
Do I need to disclose asbestos when selling?
Ask your agent or a real estate attorney. Our buying and selling guide covers the practical side.
How can I check a contractor?
SRCAA keeps a service-provider list and can share a contractor's penalty history (SRCAA).
How do I get a quote?
Use the contact form or call (509) 461-5474.
