Asbestos removal in Spokane, done by the book

Asbestos is not a do-it-yourself guess. In Spokane County, two sets of rules apply at the same time: the state labor department and the local clean air agency.

Washington allows only certified asbestos abatement contractors to bid on and perform this work. Each one must employ at least one certified supervisor, and a supervisor has to be on the job (WAC 296-65-030). The local agency, Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency (SRCAA), adds its own survey, notice and disposal steps (SRCAA).

We plan every job around both. You get a plain scope, a clear list of what gets removed, and a paper trail that shows the material went where it was supposed to go.

Stop before you scrape. If a ceiling, floor or pipe wrap might be asbestos, do not sand, drill or break it. Dust is how fibers get into the air. Call us and we will tell you what to do next, then see the home-age guide to see what your house may contain.

How a Spokane asbestos job runs

Every project follows the same order. The steps keep you legal, and they keep fibers out of the rest of the house.

  1. Survey. SRCAA requires a survey by an accredited AHERA building inspector before any renovation or demolition, and a copy stays on site (fact sheet).
  2. Scope and notice. We write the scope from the survey. For most projects the clean air agency needs a notice and a fee before removal starts.
  3. Contain. The work area is sealed, kept under negative air and cleared of people and pets.
  4. Remove and bag. Crews wet the material, remove it in suits and respirators, and seal it in labeled bags.
  5. Clean and clear. Surfaces get wet-wiped and HEPA vacuumed before containment comes down.
  6. Dispose. Waste goes to the landfill with a shipment record, within 10 days of removal (SRCAA).

What your house may contain, by age

The older the house, the more likely it holds asbestos somewhere. These are common places to look in Spokane homes. A lab test is the only way to know.

Asbestos removal questions Spokane homeowners ask

Do I need a license to remove asbestos in Washington?

Only certified asbestos abatement contractors may bid on or perform abatement work, and each must employ a certified supervisor (WAC 296-65-030). An owner-occupied single-family homeowner doing their own work has a separate allowance. See the homeowner rules page.

How do I know if I have asbestos?

You cannot tell by looking. A sample must go to an accredited lab. SRCAA requires a survey by an accredited AHERA building inspector before renovation or demolition (SRCAA). See our survey page.

Does the house have to be old for the rules to apply?

No. SRCAA's rules apply to renovation and demolition of any structure regardless of its age (SRCAA).

How long does an asbestos removal job take?

Small jobs can be finished in a day or two. Larger jobs depend on how much material there is. Most projects also have a waiting period after the notice. See the process page.

Where does the asbestos waste go?

In Spokane County, to Graham Road Landfill in Medical Lake, the only county landfill that can accept it (Spokane County staff). Read more on the disposal page.

What does asbestos removal cost?

It depends on the material, the amount and how hard it is to reach. The cost guide explains what drives the price.
